Sticky Albums

''Magnetic'' Photo Albums

Over time, traditional sticky photo albums have presented challenges as the adhesives and plastics used in their making can deteriorate, leading to acid leaks that potentially harm photographs by making them fragile and altering their colors and silver content. Removing photos from these albums can be delicate work. It is wise to wear gloves to prevent finger oils from damaging the images, with options ranging from lab gloves to cotton gloves.

Here is a step-by-step guide to safely extract photos from these albums:

  1. Begin by carefully peeling back the plastic cover without attempting to lift the image directly. Place weights strategically to prevent the page from shifting during the process.

  2. Utilize a micro spatula, a specialized tool much smaller and finer than ordinary kitchen spatulas, to gently pry under the image. If the micro spatula proves ineffective, switch to a piece of mylar, a thin polyester film with sharp edges.

  3. If the mylar begins to stick to the page backing, transition to using dental floss. Opt for standard dental floss without flavors or excessive wax, as these may complicate the process. Locate a lifted edge of the photo and carefully work the floss underneath with a side-to-side motion, avoiding any upward force that could damage brittle photos.

  4. Patience is key, so adjust your technique if facing difficulties. Once the photo is freed, lift it off the page cautiously and set it aside to preserve it intact.

By following these careful steps, you can safeguard your cherished photographs and ensure their longevity through digital preservation. Contact us to schedule your drop off!
